Sibari

Before Zanotti Bianco’s discovery in 1931, any trace of the three overlaid cities had disappeared: Sibari, the original colony founded by the Achaeans and destroyed by the Greeks of Croton, the splendid Thuri refounded by the Athenians and designed by Hippodamus of Miletus in the middle of the 5th century, and Copiae, the smallest colony under Latin law wanted by the Romans after the devastations of the Second Punic War. Everything had vanished, and some even doubted that Sibari had ever existed. A flood layer of up to 6 meters deep had, since late antiquity, buried every trace of the site.
