Velia

The Phocaeans founded Elea in the 6th century BC. They had come from the coasts of Turkey; entire families departed on warships to settle in the new cities in the western Mediterranean to start new lives over again, forming friendly relationships with the local populations. In classical times, tensions with the Lucans would have been resolved with the help of the good laws of Parmenides, originally from Elea. As Elea was gradually absorbed into the Roman orbit, this process resulted in the establishment of the Municipium of Velia.
